JACK DYLAN & THE VILLAINS

Updated: Jul 11, 2024

PREMIERE: DEBUT SINGLE | 'SWIM'

Words: Keeley Thompson

Spat out from the digestive tract of the city and crawling from the mouth of the Brown Snake, the waves welcome you to sea. The sun microwaves the aluminium exterior of the superannuated tinnie you traded unwarranted trust with a sketchy promise for. The motor exerts itself with commendable power for its age, its roar punctuated by shudders and phlegmy coughs.

Breathy tokes from cheap cigarettes spill out into the open air as the big smoke disappears into the horizon. One, two, three, four beers and a friendless seagull provide company for the journey to figure out the difference between loneliness and solitude.

Which one this is, only time will tell.

The debut single of Jack Dylan & The Villains, Swim is a “a track stewing somewhere between a sea shanty & a desert rock shuffle.” The song manages to cover formidable ground despite its 21st-century-friendly length of three minutes and three seconds.

The track opens with an ominous warning and valuable life lesson;

You’re outside looking in, I think you best learn how to swim”

The first solo project of Jack Dylan McCullagh, Swim is the first track from the upcoming record, Comfort Will Kill You. With fibrous guitar riffs and gravelly vocals, Swim weaves a tale of both stifling abundance and amaranthine desolation.
